"Bikes Up,
Guns Down,
Everybody Wanna Live
Don't Nobody Wanna Die."
-Bikes Up, Guns Down Boys and Girls chant
On January 22, a group of Black youth from Liberty City participating in a Bikes Up, Guns Down protest were assaulted by two racist white Miamians on Brickell Avenue. It began with a white woman threatening the children, calling them “a bunch of thugs" and then led to a man getting out of his car with a gun in his hand and calling them the n-word repeatedly.
Experiencing a hate crime at such an age is a deeply traumatic experience.
We are donating bikes to the affected youth as a symbol of love and support. We want to remind them that they are not alone, they have a community supporting them, and they have a right to ride through these streets proudly and safely as children should.
“Bikes Up, Guns Down” is a youth-led coalition focused on preventing violence in their neighborhoods. They organize bike rides , toy drives and cemetery cleanups . They were out there on MLK Day bringing attention to the affordable housing crisis. After this incident, they will now also combat racism.
This fundraiser is brought to you by Dream Defenders and Kenny Stills of the Miami Dolphins. Dream Defenders is a racial and economic justice group founded in the wake of Trayvon Martin's assassination. The funds from this fundraiser will go towards bikes, helmets and bike locks for Liberty City youth.
*If you are interested in donating a physical bike instead, please email us at [email redacted]*
