Preserving Local Education

Donation protected
Thank you so much for your support in helping us educate our community members on the November 28th vote. We are pleased to announce that with the 'Yes' vote we are able to move forward with our mission to preserve a local middle and high school in our community! We have been busy welcoming new committee members and taking important steps to make this dream a reality. We are happy to share that we are moving forward with the name 'Black River Academy' to preserve and extend the impressive educational history within our community since 1835! Many of our next steps require financial means and we would appreciate any amount anyone is willing to contribute. Your involvement in the process is always welcome and meetings will be occurring every Tuesday at 6:30pm in Ludlow. For more information please e-mail us at [email redacted] Thank you very much for your willingness to support our mission!

HISTORY:

The Black River Independent School Committee (BRISC) was formed in September 2017 by some members of the Looking Forward Steering Committee that wanted to find a solution for ACT 46 that best met the needs of all of the students in Ludlow & Mount Holly.

Since many families and students value a local high school option, community members, parents and teachers worked to developing an independent school model. An independent school puts the control of educating the children in the community squarely in the hands of that community. While guidelines from the state for the operation of an approved independent school still have to be followed, running an independent school also opens up a lot of freedoms in terms of extracurricular offerings, financial savings and private fundraising that are restricted in a public school.

The group aspired to ...

... preserve a local middle and high school in our community in the form of an independent Black River Middle and High School, while promoting school choice.
... draw together the community: parents, students, teachers, and residents, to develop a great school that everyone in the community can be involved with, contribute to and be proud of.
…  ensure a smooth transition from public to independent school, that minimizes the disruption for students and staff alike.

Prior to the vote some funds were collected and used for advertising, printing costs and general promotion of the 'Yes' vote. We recognize this is a large under-taking, however, we have faith in this community. Your support can help us create something truly unique and special for the students of our communities. Please help us preserve the history of Black River and our valued sense of community by transforming the current best qualities into innovative, expansive and progressive learning opportunities.

Thank you for your consideration and support as we prepare to work diligently toward our goal.
