Original post from Clarke (October 2015):
This is something I don't wish to do, and never thought I would have to do, so that even writing this seems surreal. However, my situation has become so serious that I have no other option.
Those of you who know me are aware that, for some time now, I have not been able to work. Various physical problems, including a long-term battle with diabetes, have affected my mobility and my vision. I cannot walk for long distances, I have trouble seeing properly, and occasionally I even have trouble standing. Even when walking around the house, I experience problems with my balance due to inner-ear problems and lack of feeling in my feet (due to diabetic neuropathy). I have virtually no vision in one eye, and am on a constant medical regimen that includes four daily injections of two different insulins, among other things. Since I can rarely leave the house, a lack of physical activity has exacerbated these problems, and there have been several hospital visits over the past year. All of these health issues notwithstanding, the bills keep coming in.I have gone through the money I had saved from my working years, as well as some money I inherited from family. (There are no close living family members remaining.) Now, among other things, property taxes are due on my lifelong home, and I have no more resources from which to draw. If this debt is not paid, I WILL lose my house. In the meantime, I must continue to pay for medical insurance (which doesn't quite cover everything), monthly credit card payments, and daily living expenses, including the most basic needs like utilities and food. My car has been sitting in the driveway for two years (with four flat tires and a dead battery) and will not run again without repairs that I cannot afford right now. The house is also in need of some repairs. Simply put: I'm pretty much broke. This page has been set up by friends in order to raise funds to help with the debt that I've incurred over the past year, so that I might make it to the early part of next year, when other avenues of assistance may be available (this year has yielded very little in that regard). The goal amount represents only a portion of my current debt, but anything you can contribute, any amount, large or small, will be greatly appreciated, and accepted with my profound thanks.Over the past few years, many friends from my radio days and from the Facebook community have offered their good wishes and prayers, and I am very grateful for this. You've helped to boost my spirits when I have been down, and you've gotten me through some pretty dark days. Now, if you wish to go one step further, here is a chance for you to help me in a very real and immediate manner. For those who know me, you know that asking for help in this way is extremely difficult for me. I am a very private person and airing my problems in such a public way is something I would do only as a last resort. Unfortunately, such is my situation. I ask for your help, and God's.Thank you and God bless you,Clarke
