The Book Thing Fire Damage Fund
Donation protected
This morning, 3/2/2016, a fire broke out in the Book Thing warehouse, destroying thousands of books, and doing considerable damage to the building (thankfully, nobody was harmed).
A longstanding and beloved community organization, The Book Thing is a free book exchange program housed in a small warehouse on Vineyard Lane. Their mission is simple -- " to put unwanted books into the hands of those who want them". This program provides free access to classic literature, old textbooks, novels, road maps, foreign language titles -- heck, I even got my SAT Prep book there -- to anyone who steps through their doors.
They have given so much to the community, and it's time we pay them back. I grew up near The Book Thing, and spent many a hot summer afternoon pouring through their stacks, picking up books on Ancient Rome, Clinical Psychology, Shakespeare and Sartre, and "Italian for Dummies". They rarely ask for monetary donations, only books, but books won't rebuild The Book Thing.
It's time for us to step up as a community for the organization that has given us so much over the years. I am a private citizen, and am running this campaign as a labor of love. All of the proceeds gathered from this campaign (minus the small percentage kept by GoFundMe) will go directly to The Book Thing for whatever they may need to get back on their feet, so please give what you can!
