HISTORIC UNDERGROUND TUNNELS FOUND!
When San Angelo men got that lovin' feeling, a bank and a San Angelo bordello made it easy to indulge their cravings. For 50 years, until 1946, the working women of Miss Hattie's bordello entertained travelers and locals … even while their wives waited outside, thanks to their friendly financial institution. "There used to be an underground tunnel from the bank," explained Pamela Miller, vice president of the San Angelo Convention and Visitor's Bureau. "Men would go into the bank to make their deposit and they would go into the tunnel, leaving their women out in the horse and cart." They came back when they were done with their business, she said. That comfortable arrangement lasted until the wrong customers came calling. In 1946, the Texas Rangers shut down 18 1/2 Concho Ave. and ushered the girls out. At the time, they were so sure of their return, they left everything behind. "They left a lot of their original clothing and belongings," Miller said. Sassy Fox Boutique, owned by Alfred and Barbara Strain purchased 29 E Concho Ave, the original John Fitspatrick Saloon of 1884. While restoring the Historic building, the discovery of a lifetime was found in the basement. There are 4 tunnels that are rumored to lead to the Bank and the Bordello and also rumored to lead to the Cactus Hotel. We need to open these tunnels, The entrances are particially filled with concrete and rubble. The impact on San Angelo's economy would be enormous. While digging we found an antique shoe believed to belong to one of the women working at the Bordello, an old perfume bottle that seemed to be from the early 1900's. Historians and Archelogist have looked at our find and they are in agreement with us that these are the tunnels that we have heard about. No names will be revealed. It is a huge undertaking and will be very expensive to remove the dirt and debris from them. With such amazing evidence and witnesses who have been in the tunnels. San Angelo and people from all over the world will gain knowledge and share our experience with this part of history revealed. EVERY PENNY WILL GO TO THE EXCAVATION OF THE TUNNELS ! THIS IS A VERY EXCITING TIME OF REVEALING THE HISTORY OF SAN ANGELO!
