Castroville Botanical Trail Phase 2

Castroville Texas is well known for its historic buildings and old-world charm. A little-known asset of the city is its unique natural setting, well displayed in the Castroville Regional Park. The Park is located in one of the most botanically rich parts of Texas, an area that is the meeting ground of four of the state’s 10 major vegetation zones. Many unusual and interesting plant species grow within the park itself, with a number species from South Texas reaching their northern limit in this area.
Friends of Castroville Regional Park is developing a botanical garden trail designed to show case the great diversity of native plants that occur in both the Park and the region. When completed the trail will display important plant species and include interpretive signs as well as on-line educational materials about the displayed plants. The trail will serve as a significant outdoor environmental educational resource for the region. School and nature groups and other park visitors will gain a valuable aesthetic, educational and recreational experience from walking the Botanical Garden Trail.

Progress to Date
A map of the trail's location within the park is shown below. Bed 1, an extension of the existing Butterfly garden has been completed. We have completed the upper and lower portions of the trail in bed two. In bed two we completed the installation of two beautiful cut limestone terraces to hold the display plantings. On June 8 of 2019 we did an initial planting in the terraced beds and installed water service to the bed to water the new plants.

Next Steps
We are currently raising funds for beds 3,4, and 5. During this fund raising period we will continue to add more plants to bed 2.
Your donations will help make the Castroville Regional Park Botanical Trail a reality!
