Bre'r Anancy and Friends is on a mission to advance literacy through cultural preservation and poverty alleviation in Jamaica. We plan to do this by paying homage to the icons within our society that makes us unique. Bre'r Anancy , "the tricky little spiderman who speaks with a lisp and live by his wits, the hero and villain of Jamaican folk stories" is one of these icons.

Over the years we have seen the disappearance of Bre'r Anancy and his stories from our schools.

But, our goal is to raise the funds necessary to keep this from continuing!

Literacy has been proven to be a key to peace, health, and the economic success of people and nations. The opportunity to acquire the ability to read and write has been recognized as a basic human right. But, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, there are about 1 billion non-literate adults in the world today:. and 98 percent of those live in developing countries.




As you can see the need is great.

Let me tell you a little bit more about Bre'r Anancy. The name Anancy is rooted in the West African culture of the Akan-Ashanti for whom Anancy is considered the Spider God. Bre'r Anancy is said to have spoken to the slaves' empowerment while undergoing immense subjugation. He symbolized transformative possibility. You see, Bre'r Anancy tales were and are measures of self-reliance and self-affirmation.

Few people realize how important it is for us to re-introduce and preserve Bre'r Anancy,
