Bring Books to Crazy Horse School!

Donation protected
Hi All,

I want to make everyone aware of the vast need at Crazy Horse School on the Pine Ridge Reservation that I learned of recently, when my brother began teaching there this year. The school is wonderful and has so much to offer the children, but it is also lacking in ways that would be unacceptable to many of us as parents. This came as a surprise to me because I believed as I’m sure many of you do, that money was poured into Native American Education. Sadly, this is not the case at all.
This K-12 school has no school library, and yet, there is an urgent effort underway to increase reading levels. The students have reading intervention time every day, but unfortunately they have a small number of titles to choose from. And many of the books they do have are outdated and of no interest to children or teens.

I have managed to take one batch of books up there already for my brother’s classroom and a few books for some other teachers. He shared that students who had not even cracked open a book during his prior classroom reading intervention times were now reading their new books for the entire time. Some even asked if they could take a book home. For those of you who are parents, you know how important it is to have enjoyable books that kids will actually want to read. Our goal is getting at least one bookcase in each classroom, filled with wonderful reading adventures for the children and teenagers.

Your donations will go directly to:

*buying and shipping bookcases
*buying specific titles that are of interest to K-12 students, including books by Native American authors or that celebrate Native American representation
*shipping costs to send collected/donated books to Pine Ridge Reservation.

Both my daughter, Angie, my son, Jordan, and I will be organizing book drives in the coming months in Ft. Wayne, IN and Columbus, OH, to collect books that we can send to Crazy Horse, but we already have quite a few boxes ready to ship. If we end up collecting more books or funds than the school can use, there are several other schools at the Pine Ridge Reservation who would also love to create more reading opportunities for their wonderful students.

Thanks so much!
Linda
