Vortex Alley Brewing would like to first thank everyone who has taken their time to read about us and what we are about.
A little about us:
Vortex Alley Brewing is four friends with a passion for crafting a great beer and a love to share that passion with everyone around us.
Marc Spaulding started home brewing 16 years ago through self-teaching and trial and error.With Marc’s ability to fabricate anything, he was able to build not just the tools to craft a great beer but also the recipes. Necessity is the mother of all invention should be tattooed on Marc, because out of necessity for something better, Marc has invented, designed and fabricated an amazing craft beer model
David Thomas was Marc’s first student in brewing 13 years ago. During that time, they have created and brewed countless recipes and thousands of gallons of beer. They have developed a creative rhythm that allows them to bounce ideas around to find a creative and always exciting recipe.
Jim Allen III had the brew bug strike him 10 years ago and it has stayed attached to him ever since. Jim is a traveler and loves to go everywhere. He loves to check out all the local breweries in his travels and Jim will strike up a conversation with anyone like they have been friends forever. Jim brings all the experiences back from his travels and puts what he has found in his beer crafting.
Spencer Boatmun maybe the infant of this group in brewing time but do not let that fool you. Spencer has crafted tremendous beers in the 6 years he has been brewing. Spencer's trade is in engineering and that engineering background allows him the ability to craft amazing recipes, while designing the most efficient way to accomplish the goal of great beer.
We are not just four guys that love to craft a great beer and decided to start a brewery; we are friends with a friendship that has spanned over 33 years. We have history and stories and we have common passion for craft beer that we love to share with others.
What we aim to achieve:
Vortex Alley Brewing has a dream to build the first neighborhood craft beer brewery in our home town of Ponca City, OK. This idea was started over a few pints of our home brew in Marc’s backyard about a couple of years ago and with the new Oklahoma law SB 424 passing and going into effect Aug 26th 2016 the idea was pushed into a reality.
The initial idea started out very simple; in all honesty we underestimated the true scope of what was needed to build a brewery. The truth about what it was going to take to build our dream did not sway us from what we know to be a great business plan and model. We have the ability to learn, adapt and to continually make progress even when faced with new obstacles.
Your help will go towards the following;
1. Allowing us to start with a 1.5 barrel brew system instead of the initial half barrel brew system we initially considered.
2. Larger and increased quantity of Fermenters
3. Larger and increased quantity of serving tanks
4. New Duct work – Everyone needs to be comfortable
5. Plumbing and Electrical
6. Legal assistance
7. Permits and Licensing
8. Misc Brewery and Tap Room items
With all new business startup, the one thing you can expect is the unexpected. Situations arise and problems will present themselves as they have throughout this whole process. The only way to handle these issues is to not freak out, surround ourselves with people in the know of the beer industry and ask questions.
We don’t assume anything and when we have a question we ask before we take the next step. It’s easier to ask and get it right the first time then it is to go back and try to fix this issue. We love the saying “The only thing we know is that we know nothing.” That states that we are still learning and adapting as we go through every motion.
This is an exciting time and we couldn't be happier then to be doing it right in our hometown of Ponca City, OK.
