Bristol mission to build Kenyan school

The Need
Kenya has a population of 48.5 million people (2016). 75% of them are under 30 years old!
With so many young people, the government is struggling to provide basic education for children. There are enough trained teachers, but the government is unable to employ enough of them to teach all the children, or provide enough schools. Navakholo Constituency in Kakamenga County is severely overcrowded and, where the government is unable to provide teachers and schools, churches are stepping in to help.
We're partnering with a local church we have a personal connection to: a member of our Lawrence Weston Community Church is Kenyan, and his family attend the local church (Pentecostal Revival Church in Makongeni, Nairobi) who's driving this project. They're already employing trained teachers to educate a group of children who would otherwise have no access to education; but they’re being taught under a tree because they have no building.
Our Response
Under a tree they're subject to all weather conditions, wind, distractions... and that is why we’d like to help them by building a basic corrugated iron structure with four rooms and latrines, to keep the children safe and to enable them to learn no matter the weather.
The building will be simple to build and, in keeping with other buildings in the area, be constructed with locally sourced materials. Because the local church is in charge, they can to buy the materials locally, at local prices, and then a group of Bristol volunteers will go to Kenya in November 2019 to build the structure:
• They need three class rooms to hold 30 children per class.
• A Staff Room to prepare lesson plans and teaching materials.
• 4 Toilets for Teachers and Children. (Pit Latrine)
£8,000 will cover...
This money will go a long way locally. It will not only buy the building materials and build the school, but will also cover educational materials (books, paper, pens) for three years as well as - yes, really - pay the teachers for 3 years. That's money going a long way!
Please support our efforts to raise the necessary funds for the school as generously as you can.
