Build a school in Timo, Haiti

Haiti is on the western part of Hispaniola, the second largest Island in the Greater Antilles. It shares the Island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic. It is situated in the Caribbean between Cuba and Puerto Rico.

Following Haiti's twofold tragedy: the 2010 earthquake which killed more than 250,000 people, and the most recent Hurricane Matthew in 2016, which killed more than 1,000 people and left hundred of thousands homeless; the country has been in dire help as it recovers from tragedy to opportunity.

Both tragedy have left a dire situation for the people of Haiti and created an atmosphere of concerns for the MLB students. Thus, members of BLS Stand for Haiti, a social project initiated by Peterson Clarke, a native of Haiti, and fellow students of the Master of Law and Business degree, decided to host several events throughout the academic year to help raise funds to support the people of Haiti.

Further to our successful Halloween party last year, where we were able to raised over €1,000.00 to help support the victims of Hurricane Matthew, we have decided to continue to work in conjunction with Haiti Health Initiative (HHI), a nonprofit organization which focuses on serving the public health needs of Haitian people in rural areas, to help raise €10,000 for constructing a school in Timo, Haiti.

Residents of Timo, Haiti, young and old alike, yearn for an opportunity to improve their lives through education. However, the majority of individuals in this community receive an average of 3 to 4 years total of schooling in their lifetime and 80% of current students are impoverished and financially unstable. The current facility available for use by 120 school age children, preschool through 9th grade, is only a makeshift building with inadequate facilities (Refer to picture below). There is no electricity, windows for ventilation, proper furnishings and supplies, indoor restroom facilities, or space for the 100 additional children in the surrounding communities that have to walk a minimum of 45 minutes to attend school in Tom Gato. The facility is also shared with the local Baptist congregation and classes are cancelled on average 14 times each year due to scheduling conflicts.
The project is still at its early design stages. The budget estimate for building the first phase of the school, from initial conception to completion, is expected to be $250,000. Two plots of land are already available for the facility, and residents of Timo will contribute money, time, and labor to construct the schoolhouse, however, their resources are limited.

In addition, Arup, a multinational, top engineering consultant firm, has agreed to partner with Haiti Health Initiative to provide architectural and design services. The construction of the first phase of the school have already started.

You can donate as much as you want. As little as £1.00 would make a huge difference as it will contribute significantly towards the construction of the school. In case you're unable to make a donation, please spread and share this great cause.

Once you have made a donation, you will receive regular update regarding the construction of the school, or the student you sponsor. In addition, you will also receive a personal message or card as a token of appreciation for your donation.

We really appreciate your time and support. Please note that any effort or funds donated to this cause will be greatly appreciated and will go directly to Haiti Health Initiative to help cover the cost of constructing this schoolhouse for the children and people of Timo, Haiti and surrounding areas.

This crowdfunding campaign will also be managed by the founder of Haiti Health Initiative, Marc-Aurel.
