Help propagate Bunya Trees
Donation protected
BACKSTORY
We are raising funds to start a community-based Bunya tree propagation enterprise in Brisbane and northern rivers to be used for plant propagation programs, cultural programs and native food education and in the bush foods industry.
It's that time again, the beautiful bunya trees from Queensland are dropping fruit. Myself and a small (like-minded) cohort are raising funds to propagate Bunya trees and stop the wastage of good native food and plants.
Bunya trees only fruit ever 3 years and take 10+ years to become mature trees - thus producing fruit. If this is something you can see as positive and/or interested in getting behind we would appreciate any and all support.
Costs
We are working to raise $5000 to support our team to:
*Purchase resources to propagate Bunya trees
*Support rental costs for space to grow for our first year of operation
Progress so far
We have collected over 200 Bunya cones this season that hold roughly 40 nuts to each cone that are viable. A lot of these nuts have gone past being edible as they have started to germinate. Community members are donating cones every week - so we now have an abundance of nuts to freeze for future use.
Our vision is to:
*propagate Bunya trees and plant them in the community, farms or back in the bush
*use the trees in other positive ways such as cultural and educational program.
*supply nuts to bush foods industry- chefs, restaurant and public
Thank you!
