Burt Lake Indian Tribe Burnout

The Nokomis Learning Center is raising funds to help create a historical marker to be placed on the tragic site of the Burt Lake Burnout. A whole community of Native Americans were forcibly removed from their established homes while they had to watch their homes burned to the ground.

It is not a pretty part of Michigan’s past, but the Nokomis Learning Center is wanting the story to be told. This fund raiser will be used to erect a historical marker in the small cemetery that is still owned by the Burt Lake Band of Ottawa and Chippewas.

We are currently pursuing to have the Burt Lake Tribe’s Cemetery designated as a National Historic Landmark. Please help us raise the $3900.00 for the National Historic Landmark signage.
