Please help me finish my Degree!

Hi

My name is Gordon and I’m struggling college student with debt. I live at home with my mother and my little sister. My mother and I work hard, but due to her health getting worse, I don't want her working so hard anymore.  With school bills and medical bills growing, my education was starting to be a burden on me and my family. I want to finish my degree and continue to help provide for my family but it's been tough. Growing up without my father was tough, part of my life felt empty. I would never see him in the crowd as I walked across my graduation stage, I could never ask him for guidance about my choices and I will never get the chance to tell him how much he meant to me.  My father was a great man and loved by all who knew him but, ever since his death, a trail of depression followed in his wake. It's so hard to talk about depression with loved ones because you don’t know what to say or even how to bring it up. I want to help change the way we view mental health but I need a lot more than just a dream to make that happen.

To be 100% honest, I’ve always wanted to be a lawyer ever since I was 4 years old. No matter what other careers I’ve looked at, I can’t think of becoming anything else but a lawyer. My goal to become a family lawyer to help families neither stay together or learn to move forward and grow from the separation. As a young black male, growing up without a father gave me a jaded outlook on the world as people commonly make jokes about black fathers not being in their child's lives. I remember seeing my uncle, and other males I know, fight for partial custody of their kids but the courts can make it almost impossible to regain any custody.  I know so many wonderful fathers who need help with that kind of sad situation. I want to change the way we address situations in family law for the betterment of society and securing the strong household versus destroying them for a quick buck. I want to help the legal system understand that it is more important to fix the problems, in family law, instead of creating more. I know this is a tall order but it’s been my dream for years and I want to see it through no matter the cost.

I’ve been a GateKeeper for a little over 7 years now and still going strong. I’ve received over 11 certifications for suicide prevention from these organizations:

QPR Institute,

Tufts School of Medicine,

Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide

The Jason Foundation,

Suicide Prevention Resource Center

Mental Health First Aid USA

CFAES, Ohio State University Mental Health

I would like to use my knowledge of mental health to address the issues of mental health in society and how to solve those problems. Many media mediums often romanticize many aspects of mental health and many people believe the claims made, such as if you ask someone if they are suicidal, then it would cause them to commit suicide; or how people struggling with addictions can’t stop substance abuse. Claims like these make it hard for anyone to feel comfortable speaking out about mental health to those in need and I think the best way to start the conversation is by help address the issues and misunderstandings in the media. I hope this will not only be the start of something great but a chance for me to help those in need.

To finish this phase, I need $30,000 to pay off my loans and I hope the Gofundme community can help me become the family lawyer I’ve always wanted to be and help me spread the word of suicide prevention and mental health awareness. Thank you and let's change the world!
