The Aperture Project-China Trip
Donation protected
[EDIT] - Due to unforseen circumstances, TAP's initial aim for having fundraised to travel to China during the summer of 2016 have been held back. This was due to a series of events including: school examinations, conflicting dates as well some members being accepted into university and colleges.
Hello,
We are The Aperture Project (TAP), a group of 16-17 year olds based in Dundee who meet up every week to plan and run creative community events. TAP is a branch of Front Lounge (formerly Pure Media UK), a charity, that has various projects including ‘Bringing Up Baby’, a playgroup run by young parents for young parents; On The Whole, a safe meeting place run by and looked after by young people for looked after young people; and iGNiTE, a youth development programme Front Lounge has run all over Scotland, in India, South Africa, and China.
Pictured above: Members of T.A.P with a group of young people from Inverness.
We are a creative group that has run various projects called 'iGNiTEs' mainly around film and photography. Our projects are usually based around the local community or about less widely recognised issues.
T.A.P is raising money in the effort to allow the members of T.A.P to successfully afford a trip to China which is planned to occur in 2017.
What Is iGNiTE?
iGNiTE is a process of taking an idea and making it tangible. It consists of 3 stages:
1. Idea – where an idea or stimulus is presented to a group that acts as the starting point of the process.
2. Development – where that original idea is transformed by the group into a physical thing e.g. a piece of music, a series of photographs, a film and so on through discussion, decision making and creativity.
3. Presentation – where the developed idea is presented to an audience, and marks the end of the iGNiTE experience.
The iGNiTE process usually takes place in a very short space of time, typically 3 days, and will encourage participants to make use of a medium they have never used before: iGNiTE encourages people out of their comfort zones. We have experienced the impact iGNiTE has had on our lives and recently made a film of previous participants who spoke passionately about the impact iGNiTE has on their lives and on the lives of the people they worked with. Furthermore iGNiTE is an excellent vehicle for us to equip others with the skills we have obtained through training.

China 2017
We plan to go to China in the summer of 2017. Once there we will be running 3 iGNiTE events:
1. Teaching children games and some basic English with the “I Read” project in Lijiang, Yunnan Province, run by He Jiarun, who has a longstanding friendship with Pure Media UK.
2. Running a project similar to the one we ran in Inverness where we were given free reign to do a project of our choosing using photography, music & film as our creative mediums with a group of young people in Xi’an.
3. Teaching a group of teachers in Shenzhen how to run their own iGNiTE events using our past experience of running them.
Going to China will give us an incredible chance to discover more about the Chinese culture while working with people there and get an idea of what life is like in their country. It will also help us gain experience of working outside of our ‘comfort zone’ helping us grow as people while engaging in creative activities with new people. By going we will also bring iGNiTE to new communities and share our experiences with them. We will also learn some Mandarin, the world’s most widely spoken language. Going to China will be an opportunity to create great memories and contacts across the world. It is our hope that participants in China will get a better understanding of our culture and way of life. We will teach some English, something that is highly prized in China. We also hope that introducing iGNiTE to different communities will impact their lives in a positive way, opening up new ideas & options for their futures.
