To my family, friends, and supporters, I, Kenneth “MAC” McCaster, feel that the time has now come for me to seek elected office as your Sheriff of Orangeburg County in the 2016 Democratic primary election. Having been involved in the Orangeburg community for many years, I have worked long and hard for positive change in Orangeburg County. I’m ready to present fresh ideas, positive solutions, and a more responsive and proactive approach to keeping the people and small businesses of Orangeburg County safe and secure.
For the ones of you who don’t know me, I am a 29 year police veteran and currently a fulltime Criminal Justice faculty member at South Carolina State University and have been involved in law enforcement executive administration for over 20 years. I hold a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Troy University as well as another master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from South Carolina State University. After being shot in the line of duty on the streets of Orangeburg County, I was the recipient of the Medal of Valor from Orangeburg County Sheriff Department.
As you all probably know, I have always been very concerned about localized crime issues. I truly believe that there are workable solutions available that will enhance the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Department and its quest to deliver quicker, more efficient, and professional service to the great citizens in all areas of the county. I would like to see a more proficient, proactive, and accountable department that is able to decrease crime which will attract more industry to Orangeburg County, as well as forming more meaningful and personal partnerships with area residents and small businesses.
Another important issue that has been brought to my attention is being able to recruit deputies that are “home grown” or who can be localized into the Orangeburg community, meaning deputies that understand the trials and struggles of the citizens of Orangeburg County. Deputies that are a reflection of the people that they intend to serve and protect. Deputies that are professional and have vested interest in this community.
I know that change is hard to imagine and envision, but being the parent or family member of a murdered, raped, or robbed loved-one is unbearable, and these images will not change with reactive policing. It is important that the next Sheriff of Orangeburg County not only solve these crimes, but prevent them with a proactive plan and program. The citizens of Orangeburg County deserve to have a Sheriff’s Department that is not afraid to tackle these issues and have the means to do so. When I am elected Sheriff of this great community, I can promise more localized deputies, visibility, transparency, meaningful community partnerships, citizen review boards, and most importantly I will be accountable and available to all voters in the county, regardless of your community location, your economic status, or family name and prominence. I will be the Sheriff for all of Orangeburg County.
