Calvin's Big Dream College Fund

Hi Everyone!

My name is Calvin Mihal and I am a high school senior in Bay Village, OH. I currently am attending Bay High School and have had a pretty successful high school career so far. I have worked hard to be a part of the top 30% in my class and to be selected into National Honors Society at my school which is an elite honor for high school students. I am looking at going to some of the top schools in the nation that many people have heard of. There is just one big problem.... These schools are very expensive and I am on my own for the cost of college tuition. Yes, I could take the easier route in this case and go to community college but then I wouldn't fully fulfill my dream that I have set for myself- going to a top tier university and becoming a doctor. I am looking at many scholarships and applying to everything I can but I just don't know if I can safely say that I will be able to attend college. I need the help of others like you guys in any shape or form to allow me to attend school and make a difference in this world.

It has been a very stressful year to say the least. I have applied to ten schools while working as a cashier at Heinen's Grocery Store twenty-five hours per week to save up as much as I can. The ten schools I have applied to are The University of Alabama, Auburn University, The Ohio State University, The University of South Carolina, The University of Florida, The University of Cincinnati, The University of Southern Florida, The University of Kentucky and The University of Georgia. As of right now, my heart is set on Georgia but I am still waiting to hear back in March. I have heard back from my first five, The University of Kentucky, The University of Alabama, The University of Cincinnati, The University of Mississippi and have gotten in!!! It's a very exciting time, but then again the money factor is also in my mind almost all the time. I feel left out at my school because most kids in my community have trust funds, or their parents set up 529 plans or they just do not need to worry about the funds for college. My circumstances have  me super stressed out and very upset nightly.

This year has been very rough on my family.   First off, my mom was diagnosed with Celiac Disease and several other autoimmune diseases.  She lost her job while on disability.  Our family lost all of our health insurance.  My mom is in pain daily.  She is in the process of applying for social security disability but it has been a struggle since she has not been seen by a doctor recently. Second, my dad passed away  in September of 2016 from a sudden heart attack. It shook my sister and I deeply, I could hardly function for a good two weeks and I still can't get past it but I have been trying my best to make him proud as he watches in spirit. His life goal that he always told me about was to see my sister and I graduate. He got to see my sister, but sadly this year he won't be able to see me.  This year has just been one of the roughest years of my life and with college coming up it doesn't help.

I have attempted the SAT and ACT tests four times for each and never gave up but I still am not satisfied because I did not achieve merit scholarship score requirements that I needed to pay fully for college. I was truly hoping I would achieve higher scores but it was just stress at the time of the tests and I am not a good standardized test taker in those enviroments. I can assure you all I am the most goal oriented and driven high schooler you will ever meet and I am so excited to see where life will take me, I just need help along my path to success.

Being independent and hardworking, it is difficult to ask for help. But everyone needs a hand once in a while, and I see my limitations. I cannot even begin to express how deeply grateful I would be for support. Anything you could give would mean the world to me! If all of my Facebook friends gave just $10, we would reach my goal! Not everyone will give however, or see my posts. Please help make this happen. Be one of the friends who does give. Post and repost this so that your friends or their friends may give $1. You will be rewarded with love, gratitude, and the joy of knowing I am one step closer to achieving one of the most important things in my life. I will be able to repay everyone by one day making a difference in the world, either creating the next big vaccine or helping someone who may be suffering from what my mom has. Please, please help to catapult another educated person out into the world! I would be forever grateful.

Love,

Calvin Mihal
