Help me reduce plastic pollution in our oceans
Donation protected
Hi :)
If you don't know me, I'm Candy, I'm and artist and a marine biologist, and, with the support of people like you, I work to reduce marine plastic pollution. I've been selected to sail to the Galapagos Islands with the eXXpedition Round the World project in January / February 2020, as resident artist and as a scientist, to research plastic pollution and find ways to reduce it, and I'm looking for some help with funding.
***I'll clean a metre of beach for every £1 you donate; the plastics found will be recycled, upcycled or properly disposed of, and the data will be used for scientific research***
Three years ago, I sailed the Caribbean with eXXpedition, sampling for marine plastics, as part of an all female crew. We provided important female role models in science and adventure, we conducted research into plastic pollution, and we met with schools, community groups and government officials, raising awareness and hoping to change policy.
When we arrived, we saw this:
Following our time in the Caribbean, single-use plastics are now banned in Jamaica, Dominica, Turks and Caicos, Haiti, St Vincent, Grenada, the Bahamas, with Trinidad and Tobago and Belize expected to follow suit, banning manufacture, import and distribution of plastic bags, straws, styrofoam cups and food containers.
I've also spent the past three years bringing what I learnt about plastics in the Caribbean to a UK and global audience, through art. I clean beaches, and upcycle plastics I find into art, and then exhibit that art to raise awareness and show people simple ways to reduce their plastic footprint and how they can make easy changes that can have a big impact for the planet.
In the past three years I've taken part in fifty art exhibitions, cleaned miles of beaches, given talks and workshops, made infographics, done social media stuff, worked with lots of different groups, lead community outreach, and reached tens of thousands of people.
I'd like to continue my narrative by sailing with eXXpedition again, meeting a new group of incredible women and working together on cutting-edge scientific research and solutions based thinking. I can do more to influence policy and to spread the word, and I can reach and inspire more people with new stories and adventures, as well as new art exhibitions inspired by the wonderful creatures of the Galapagos.
I've had such a fantastic response to my work since I first sailed with eXXpedition, I'm so grateful for all the support I've had, and all the wonderful feedback I've received from individuals and businesses who have made changes after hearing my message. With your help I can do even more to save the world.
Thank you.
