Every year, several thousand International Students on the Summer Work Travel (J-1) Visa program make Cape Cod and the surrounding islands their summer home during their university break. These students are motivated by the opportunity to be ambassadors of goodwill and understanding between their country and the United States. The goal of the program is to make long lasting friendships with Americans, learn new skills and better understand our culture, values, and customs. These exchange visitors travel thousands of miles to work in our resorts, shops, and restaurants. Their earnings help subsidize their cultural exchange program expenses and their activities within the community.
The Work Travel program is designed to be a cultural experience, where the participants interact with their American employers, co-workers, customers, and individuals within their temporary community. These exchange visitors are the world’s future leaders: ambassadors, teachers, doctors, engineers, lawyers. Their experience for one summer in the United States is going to shape who they become. The stakeholders of the Summer Work Travel Program (sponsors, employers, and the community) have a duty to welcome these students, support them, and most importantly, ensure their safety.
Why the Lower Cape? Approximately 30% of the Summer Work Travel participants on Cape Cod work and live in the towns of Brewster, Harwich, Chatham, and Orleans. Around 300 of these students finish work between the hours of 10:00 PM and 1:00 AM on any given night. The majority of these students walk or bike to and from work, often on busy and hazardous roads with little to no shoulder, few sidewalks, and poor street lighting. The participants need safer transportation options, especially at night.
About the Bus Routes: Using data collected from area employers regarding shift end times, number of students finishing work at those times, and housing addresses, two bus routes were designed with the help of the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority. Local transportation company, Cape Destinations, has agreed to provide the service from approx. July 1 through September 2.
The first route will serve the businesses around the intersection of Routes 137 and 39 in East Harwich, then east to Route 28, south through Chatham, then west on Route 28 to Patriot Square in South Dennis.
The second route will start at Skaket Corners in Orleans, head north into southern Eastham, then back into Orleans, west to Main Street in Brewster, then south on Route 137. Both buses will run from 10:00 PM to approximately 1:00 AM. Complete bus route maps and schedules are provided in the comments section. These routes will serve the majority of Summer Work Travel participants working late in these communities.
