Hurricane ALS Patient Carmelo Diaz
Donation protected
After 29 years of living with ALS, we almost lost Carmelo three times due to lack of electricity after Hurricane Maria. My sister and Carmelo's home has no running water, no electricity, damaged toilets, and their appliances are destroyed.
Carmelo was moved to my mother's house where there is running water. Through the grace of God, I purchased the last generator at the hardware store, which saved his life. After a few weeks the fumes were so heavy from the gasoline that Carmelo was getting sick. Afraid of taking him to the hospital because of possible bacterial infections spreading, we had to keep moving him.
Finally Team Gleason, an organization founded by former NFL star, Steve Gleason, who also has ALS, is arranging to fly Carmelo to the mainland. Thanks to Clare Durrett, Carmelo and my sister Bere Padilla will stay in the states.
Carmelo's only income comes from social security benefits. The primary caretaker for Carmelo is my sister Bere, so there is no other income coming in besides the $714.00 a month in benefits. And after Hurricane Maria, they have lost everything. With your help, they can begin to rebuild their lives.
