Positive public school stories need to be uplifted now more than ever. We are Cornerstone Academy for Social Action Middle School (C.A.S.A.), a district public school in the North Bronx, and we want to share our story with the world as one of many examples of transcendent public schools.
I Jamaal Bowman, along with Johwell St. Cilien, will be responsible for the funds that are raised.
It's time for the world to hear the struggles and triumphs directly from students, teachers, parents, activists and scholars, and why we need public schools now more than ever!
To do so, we are ecstatic to partner with Johwell St-Cilien Films to shoot a full length documentary. CASA and Johwell have worked together on a variety of amazing projects. Please check them out below! Our most popular video, The CASA 7 Habits has over 14,000 views!
This documentary will tell the inspiring story of CASA, while analyzing education more broadly. We also want this documentary to serve as a call to action to take learning, living, and loving, beyond our current myopic view toward true self actualization. The current political climate demands that we tell our story now!
The $20,000 raised will go towards contracting with Johwell St. Cilien Films for directing and editing, along with equipment, travel costs and room and board. We need to raise this money by April 15th 2017!
The mission of C.A.S.A. Middle School is to provide an aesthetic learning environment that graduates self-aware, hard-working, and socially responsible, 21st century learners and creators.
At CASA we know that all children will meet the expectations set forth for them by the adults in their lives. Therefore, teachers work collaboratively with parents and the community to set incredibly high expectations aligned to the multiple intelligences, that nurture the development of the whole child. As stated by Nelson Mandela, " Education is the most powerful weapon which can be used to change the world." CASA exists to empower children to create a world of justice for all.
Our school culture is rooted in love, innovation, self awareness, and justice. We have counseling and mediation services for students, and implement restorative justice practices as necessary. We have a community circle meeting every Friday in which we celebrate our positive school culture through inspirational videos, poetry, performances, public apologies, and student-to-student and staff-to-student shout outs.
We believe all children should be given the opportunity to play an instrument, dance, sing, play, build, struggle and collaborate both inside and out the academic environment. Our school is a learning community that consistently adjusts itself to meet the needs of our children to nurture the expression of their unlimited potential.
