Help empower women through heavy lifting!
Many people think that students at the University of Oxford are young, rich, male, pale, heterosexual and not disabled. In fact, many students at Oxford do not fit these stereotypes.
The Linacre Ladies that Lift powerlifting club welcomes Oxford University women, cis and trans, and people with complex gender identities that include ‘woman’, of all ages, from all social classes and of all abilities and disabilities. We are based in Linacre College, perhaps the most ethnically diverse College in the University of Oxford. Powerlifting makes us strong, confident and persevering. See a ten-minute video about our club here: https://vimeo.com/270759981 Some of us lift for fitness and personal development; some of us compete nationally and internationally. Most of our members are students, and some struggle financially to participate in the club. So far we have never excluded anyone on the basis of ability to pay.
Our club captain, Dr Catherine Walter, is going to be 72 years old on October 3rd. On that day, Catherine will attempt to deadlift a total of 7200 pounds in an hour, by deadlifting her own bodyweight 55 times.
Please support Catherine and our club so that we can:
- subsidise expenses for students who can't afford full fees (£5 = one student session)
- buy equipment (£35 = a pair of spinlock collars to hold the weights on the bar; £60 = a powerlifting belt to share between members; £150 = a second lightweight Olympic-sized bar so women who are not used to lifting weights can begin to do so)
- cover travel and accommodation expenses for competitions (£225 = travel and accommodation for one of the student members who has qualified for the World Drug Free Powerlifting Federation Championships in Glasgow, Scotland in November 2018)
