Support a Local SCID Child

Donation protected
Help create a community of courage for local SCID (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency) children by donating to the Friends of Jordan 5K & Kids' Run. This is the event's second year; last year, $4,500 was donated to a local family who lost their nine-month-old son to SCID. This year, the event will sponsor Dalton, a 22-month-old with SCID.

At eight weeks old, Dalton developed severe skin infections; despite help from pediatricians and dermatologists, they would not go away. Dalton's family was referred to the Doernbecher hematology/oncology unit. There, they looked at Dalton's blood work. On August 15, 2013, when Dalton was only eleven months old, the doctors told his family that Dalton had no neutrophils, a type of white blood cell. After five days of tests, including a bone biopsy, Dalton and his family were sent home. A week later, the stunned doctors told Dalton's family that they found no neutrophils or T-cells, another type of white blood cell, in his blood. On that day, August 23, Dalton was diagnosed with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID). For four months, Dalton underwent various medical procedures. These included high-dose chemotherapy to kill the rest of his immune system, weekly platelet transfusions that he was allergic to, and the placement of a catheter to administer medicine and draw blood. On December 13, Dalton had his bone marrow transplant. Bone marrow transplants are a must for SCID children because, unlike Dalton's bone marrow, the new marrow is able to produce white blood cells. His transplant was successful! Although Dalton is recovering well, he still requires medical treatment. The profits from this event will be donated to the Reno family to help offset past and future medical bills.
