A Pathway to Hope

Kera has travelled around the world and waited patiently for this life-changing surgery.  As a puppy on the streets of Egypt, Kera's legs and growth plates were shattered, and she was left to die.  Many would have laid down and given up.  The pain is unimaginable.  But, Kera persisted and grew up on the streets without medical care, left with one non-functioning leg and one leg that won’t bend at all.  Kera has faced every painful obstacle with a smile and playful spirit. 



Kera survived and eventually was found as street dog and rescued.  Sadly her front leg became non-functional and did not grow to size, and her back leg healed in such a way that the muscle is preventing the leg from bending.  While Kera can still walk, run and even play, her mobility is limited and her long term prognosis is poor in terms of her mobility. 



Kera travelled around the world to get the surgeries she needed for her leg.  She visited an orthopedist who said nothing could be done, but we refused to believe that.  We got a second opinion with a cutting-edge orthopedist who researched and found a solution for Kera.  But, we need your help to provide Kera with this involved and cost prohibitive surgery.

 

In preparation for surgery, Kera has been wearing a brace on her back leg.  The brace has dug into her leg, becoming painful and creating sores, so surgery has become more urgent.  This incredibly delicate surgery will cut the muscle preventing her leg from bending and insert metal rods.  She will be splinted for approximately 6 weeks, and may require a second knee surgery.  It is a long road, but we have stood by Kera’s side since the moment we saw the video of her running and playing – since the moment we saw her beautiful spirit despite all odds.


Kera has battled a lifetime of obstacles, travelled around the world, and patiently waited a year for this surgery.  Her story has come full circle.  Please help us to give Kera the life she has always deserved.  We need your help to be able to afford the care Kera so desperately needs. 

This is an extremely sad story, and one we want so badly to have a happy ending. A friend of one of our volunteers reached out to us a month ago about a cat who showed up in his yard with a small wound on his neck and looking a bit disheveled. He feeds two other cats outside, so this poor soul found his way to the food source.

Unfortunately he hadn’t shown up much since then so we couldn’t get to him. In the past week, he started showing up daily and looking worse with each passing day. We tried to trap him over the past few days and he wasn’t having it.

His time was clearly running out and we were getting desperate. He allows pets and even head butts and rubs against our legs, but we didn’t want to risk picking him up and getting bit. Because trapping wasn’t working, one of our very brave volunteers picked him up quickly while the other volunteer held open the carrier. And finally - he was safe!

He has so much going on, and for so long, it’s beyond heartbreaking.

He is such a sweet, loving, kind boy. He is either blind or has very little sight. He has swollen lymph nodes, two large abscesses on his neck, with necrotic tissue that will most likely need surgical removal. He’s dehydrated, has an upper respiratory infection and is extremely thin.  His back foot and his tail are also bleeding. He has a long road ahead of him.

One of the most incredibly upsetting things of all is that while looking through old posts, we found someone had posted a sick looking cat a year ago! And it's him!! He’s been out there suffering for a year. And because of how friendly he is, he was clearly someone’s pet. He deserves so much better.

We are exhausted. 

We have battled a season of fleas, ringworm, coccidia, giardia, upper respiratory infections and so much more that we are too tired to remember.  We have used more bottles of bleach and more of our own dollars than we like to admit.  We are the volunteers and the rescuers who make up the small, but mighty, team at A Pathway to Hope, and we need your help. 

Despite being emotionally, physically and financially exhausted, we have come upon more kittens and cats that we just can’t turn away from.  We have taken in two critically ill kittens from one colony where at least 2 moms still have kittens out there after finding out too late about the first two kittens to pass away.  We need to go back and get the others.  We need funds for their medical care and supplies.  We have a very sick cat at a colony we manage that we need to trap.  We have uncovered a huge colony of over 30 cats that are suffering from illness, hunger and multiplying daily.  We have the majority of our kittens from this past kitten season still in need of homes, and we have to place them in order to rescue more.  It is just too much, and we are seeking help everywhere we can.  If you can help by adopting or fostering, please email [email redacted].

So, we ask you to please help us to continue on this year.  As the temperatures drop, and kittens are still born, and cats still struggle to eat and survive, we have to keep going even though our homes are full of fosters and our hearts are tired.

Please help! Our friends at K9 Nanni were in an accident in their transport van filled with dogs. Everyone is safe, but we need to help our partners at K9 Nanni get a new van!

The K9 Nanni van picks up and drops off dogs every day to allow their moms and dads to send them for play while they are at work. It is a unique opportunity for working families to allow their dogs to get socialization and exercise. This past week, the van was cut off while FILLED with dogs. The driver was able to minimize the accident and keep everyone safe while help quickly rushed on the way. But, the accident left our friends at K9 without a van. Their beautiful, personalized van is now totaled, and because it was an older vehicle (reliable and full of character!) they will get very little from insurance. They are waiting for insurance – but they also need a van now to continue to do the amazing work they do for the dogs in our community.

Did you know? A Home for Pathway is ONLY here – these dogs are ONLY safe – because of K9 Nanni. They offered us a building, they offered us staff, they offered us love and they offered us the ability to save lives – because they wanted to be a part of the lifesaving work that we do. We work together to make A Home for Pathway and K9 Nanni an incredible collaboration of business and rescue – but to that end their success is our success! They give us so much each and every day – they are responsible for the majority of the care of our dogs – they have allowed us to overflow our building into their boarding space at no extra cost – and we need to help them in their time of need.

Linda and Tashon of K9 Nanni are two of the most incredible, selfless people that we know. To this end, they often spend their last dollar helping others. They have spent their last dollar helping us at Pathway. Our success in saving more lives at Pathway is directly dependent on the strength of K9 Nanni. Together, we are a lifesaving force with a partnership unlike anything you will see in the rescue world - love, care, exercise, snuggles within an safe, existing doggy daycare facility. And, we don’t rescue the easy dogs. Our dogs are all last chance babies that had nowhere else to do – dogs that were turned away by other rescues, abandoned by their families and often facing euthanasia as we raced to their rescue. That is the heart of Pathway, and that is the heart of K9 Nanni.

These two tiny babies were found today in Sussex County with serious injuries, both in shock after being hit by a car.  The female is suffering from two broken legs and a possible prolapsed rectum.  The male has a broken leg and blood in his urine.  Both were rushed to our amazing friends at Franklin Lakes Animal Hospital and are receiving urgent care to try to save them, but we need your help!  We were told that it will cost thousands to save them - what do we want to do?  We want to give them a chance!  Please help us to save them!  

Urgent help needed with barn homes and donations!!! We unexpectedly trapped 11 (yes 11!) cats tonight.  We believe we have a total of 20 in need of TNR (relocation for some).  We were trapping in 2 locations - one a mom and babies suddenly showed up at what we thought was our sterile colony, other we were helping an elderly couple and returned tonight to find starving cats and kittens and dirty empty bowls. It was something I've not experienced before - seeing these cats that were used to daily meals so desperate for food, gulping it whole. I've been trapping a long time, and I've never fed as I was trapping but I didn't have to heart not to fill their tummies a little first. We trapped every cat we could because it was a heartbreaking scene. I didn't even know the final head count until we finished and counted carriers. We left some cats, but we will return to feed, of course, until we get them all.  We have at least one injured cat left to trap as well. Please, if you can help, we desperately need to relocate at least 6 of the cats from today (about 4 months old), if not all, to a safe barn home because clearly they aren't being fed or cared for. We need donations for TNR surgery ($55 per cat, $20 for dewormer and revolution) and donations of cat food (wet, any brand) and yesterday's news litter. A Pathway to Hope

. A Pathway to Hope is a foster based rescue dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and adoption of abandoned dogs and cats.  They rely on volunteers and donations to operate. We were so impressed with them that we became one of the many Pathway foster families and volunteers. While working with Pathway, we have seen first hand how far even the smallest donation goes towards helping rescue dogs and cats in need. Routine rescue costs include food, shelter, medical care, and transportation. 100% of donations go to the animals.

Sadly, we have seen an increase in abandoned and neglected dogs right here in New Jersey. The breed that seems to suffer the most are pit bulls, who have often been subjected to unspeakable treatment and conditions.  Scott will be competing in an amateur mixed martial arts fight (MMA) on Septeber 27th with the hopes of being sponsored by our friends, family, and rescue advocates.  He would like to dedicate this fight to our most misunderstood bully breeds in an attempt to raise money and awareness. The sponsorship is not just about the fight, but also the journey.  We will post updates via social media as Scott spends his training camp working with some of the best fighters, trainers, and coaches in the world of mixed martial arts and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
