Hector Guadalupe spent a decade behind bars, but he used that time to transform himself through physical fitness. After his release, he built a successful career as a personal trainer in New York City and eventually began helping others follow his path. Today, his nonprofit, A Second U Foundation, has helped more than 200 formerly incarcerated men and women get certified, find family-sustaining jobs and build careers in the fitness industry. While the federal recidivism rate is more than 40%, only two graduates from Hector’s program – less than 1% -- have reoffended.

Our mission is to educate, certify, and secure employment for formerly incarcerated men and women as certified personal trainers and other fitness industry professionals. Through opportunity, empowerment, and community we seek to eliminate recidivism. The program not only recruits, educates, and provides job placement, but it also works to create networks and community for people coming home. A Second U works to decrease recidivism, while creating opportunities, access, and community for formerly incarcerated people.
