New York City Chess Exploration Trip
We are thrilled to announce our first Chess Exploration Trip since Covid-19. We're headed to compete in New York City! Our club comprised of members more affectionately known as Stormers is excited to embark on this journey to participate in the highly anticipated Tri-State Chess Championships at Bryant Park on August 20th and to further our mission to create the next generation of problem solvers, critical thinkers and future leaders.
Over the last year, ASAC has been planning the visit to take 30 Stormers to New York to compete with more than half of those going demonstrating financial need. Thus far, players and their families have been raising money to support this need and thus far have reached 1⁄3 of a $27,000 goal. With more than $18,000 more to go, ASAC is seeking the public’s help.
“The Chess Exploration Trip is not just about competing in the championships; it is an opportunity for our passionate chess players to be exposed to different avenues and cultures of chess in New York City, while also experiencing the diverse chess community the city has to offer.” Sorsby is excited to see how the trip will aid in the advancement of the Stormers skills and foster their growth as chess players and young people. He also added, “As our students eagerly prepare for the upcoming NYC trip, their enthusiasm to travel, compete, explore, and learn is undeniable. Their relentless efforts to sharpen their skills are a clear reflection of their unwavering commitment to achieving unparalleled success at the tournament."
During the visit, the ASAC players will engage in various educational and recreational activities that will enhance their chess skills, broaden their horizons, and create lasting memories. One of the highlights of this trip will be a visit to the renowned Columbia University, where the young chess enthusiasts will have the chance to immerse themselves in the academic atmosphere and learn from some of the brightest minds in the field. Additionally, the players will receive a guided tour at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET), where they will explore the fascinating world of art, connect it to art in chess, and draw inspiration from its timeless masterpieces.
