Abdul Wafi Ziar, or Engineer Wafi as many of his close friends called him, was an Afghan who came to the United States in 2021 and had many hopes of starting a successful new life in this country. He had a wife and three young boys, Ahmad Zafar (7 years old), Uzair (5 years old), and Abobakar (2 years old), whom he had been forced to leave in Afghanistan when he escaped the country in 2021. His hopes for his future were shattered when he found that he had terminal cancer in late October and only a few months to live. When he found out about his diagnosis, Abdul Wafi shared some powerful and wise words:
“Disease like this is similar to a final exam with only a short time to prepare. This is a time to forgive all others, and to ask for forgiveness…. It is Allah’s will, Allah’s plan, and that is always good. I know where I am going, I trust Allah, even if I feel scared, Allah will say: “Don’t worry, I am here with you, come along.” This life is short but the next life is forever.”
On December 1st, Abdul Wafi lost his battle with cancer and returned to his creator. He was much loved by those that knew him and will be dearly missed. His final request was that he be returned and buried in Afghanistan so that he may be close to his family.
