Riding Through the Darkness
Mike McCarthy’s life has been defined by his unwavering commitment to family, football, and fostering the success of others. His journey began at Crawfordsville High School in Indiana, where his skill and determination earned him All-State honors in 1963 as a standout running back. This achievement launched him to the University of Cincinnati, where he played running back, contributing to pivotal victories and forming lifelong bonds with teammates like future NFL coach Tom Rosley.
After his playing days, Mike transitioned into coaching, where his impact was profound. At Troy High School in Ohio, he mentored athletes like Randy Walker, who would go on to lead Northwestern University to a Big Ten Championship, and Gordon Bell, who set records at the University of Michigan and played in the NFL. Later, as head coach at McCutcheon High School in Lafayette, Indiana, Mike built a winning program and led the team to an impressive 10-2 record in 1976, creating a foundation of excellence that persists today.
Beyond football, Mike was a devoted husband to Debbie, whom he met during his time at the University of Cincinnati, and a dedicated father to his three children: Patrick, Shaun, and Dan. He was always there—driving family and friends across the country, coaching youth sports, and cheering at scholastic events. His influence extended to his six grandchildren: Lola, Stella, Scarlett, George, Leo, and Declan. Whether it was taking family and friends on unforgettable trips to Michigan or building confidence in young athletes, Mike’s legacy is one of unwavering support, mentorship, and love.
Now, as Mike faces the challenges of Alzheimer’s, we are determined to honor his life and the incredible impact he has had. This January, 22nd as he turns 79, I will ride 8,000 meters a day for 31 days—a total of nearly 250,000 meters. The significance of 8,000 meters reflects his resilience and strength, and it symbolizes the year ahead as he approaches his 80th birthday. This challenge represents not only the perseverance my dad has shown throughout his life but also the ongoing fight against Alzheimer’s—a disease that affects so many families.
We are partnering with the Alzheimer’s Association https://www.alz.org, and all funds raised will go toward advancing research and providing resources for families affected by Alzheimer’s. The challenge reflects the resilience my father has shown throughout his life—a testament to never giving up, even in the face of life’s greatest challenges.
I invite you to join me in honoring my dad and countless others affected by this disease. Whether you contribute to the fundraiser, share the story, or cheer me on, every gesture makes a difference. Together, we can bring hope to those living with Alzheimer’s and their families.
Let’s ride through the darkness and fight for a brighter future.
