Golden Heart is our beloved SigEp tradition revived in 2022 with the goal of blending fun and philanthropy. Throughout the week-long competition, nominees compete for the honorary title of SigEp’s 2025-2026 “Golden Heart.” Most importantly, this year’s collaborative efforts will raise a significant amount of money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and spread mental health awareness around the Truman Community!

Brought back in memoriam of our brother, who lost his life after a long battle with mental health, we are attempting to raise $15,000 this year to foster a successful fraternal philanthropy that brings everyone in our community together. Through your help, we will bring the epidemic of mental health to the forefront of national attention and show that we can all stand united together to ensure that life is always worth living.

Hi everyone,

My name is Madison Birge. This year, I’m honored to run the Boston Marathon in memory of a dear family friend, Christian Brixius, who tragically passed away from suicide on September 17, 2024. Christian was a kind, generous, and loving soul who touched the lives of everyone he met. He had a deep passion for sports and was a dedicated soccer and basketball player who gave his all both on and off the field.

In his name, I’m raising funds for the American Suicide Awareness Foundation to help prevent tragedies like this and support mental health awareness. I invite you to join me in this cause.

Hope Myers was a student at North Allegheny Intermediate High School, a 9th grader when she committed suicide. No one should have to go through what Hope did, so in her name, I am raising money to support those who need help, especially young students like Hope. People who struggle with family, social life, work life, and many other issues should receive the help they need when they need it.

Hi, I'm Kyle and some of you may may know me as Blade_BossEDC. I've expiernced death by suicide first hand. 15 years ago this year (2025) my brother decided to take his own life, thinking it was a better option than reaching out and saying he needed help. I understand this to a certain extent. I know what it's like not to feel like life is worth living anymore. I myself struggled with addiction and mental health issues for alot of my own life. Thankfully I was never able to fully achieve suicide.

Since my brother took his life I've had a very strong respect for life and how precious it truly is. I've been able to maintain 9 consistent years of sobriety and mental health stability as I continue to grow.

In honor of my brother Ryan AND the 15th year anniversary of his decision I hope and pray we together can raise 2,000$ to donate to the AFSP.

I fully support them and their mission. I also plan on doing the out of the darkness suicide prevention and awareness walk here in Chicago in 2025.

I'm also growing my hair to donate it to locks of love on June 30th 2025 because my brother loved to have long hair, and I myself have never actually grown it out.

I hope we can achieve this goal together and that I can help bring a little bit awareness to mental health and suicide prevention.

Five years ago, we lost our dear friend, Brian Held Jr., to suicide. Brian was a remarkable individual—a local celebrity, co-host of The Week in Geek radio show, voice actor, fan group extraordinaire, a passionate advocate for charitable causes, and someone who brought light and humor into the lives of everyone he met. He always made you feel valued, he remembered every person he ever met and details about them. He had a knack for putting people together to help further his Cult of Done mantra.

He had just started his journey toward better health and was running every morning. He and I were planning on running the Guinness challenge (an 8k at the time, where you drink Guinness every mile) in The Week in Geek shirts in 2020 as a way to bring more awareness to the show.

To honor Brian's memory, Skungy and I are taking on the Guinness Challenge (now a 5k)—while wearing our beloved Week in Geek shirts. This run is a way to keep a promise to a friend and help make a difference, just as he made in our community.

All funds raised through this campaign will be donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP): Dedicated to saving lives and providing hope for those affected by suicide.

Established in 1987, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is a voluntary health organization that gives those affected by suicide a nationwide community empowered by research, education, and advocacy to take action against this leading cause of death. AFSP is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. AFSP creates a culture that’s smart about mental health by engaging in the following core strategies: funding scientific research, educating the public about mental health and suicide prevention, advocating for public policies in mental health and suicide prevention, and supporting survivors of suicide loss and those affected by suicide.

It's the third year that the sisters of Sigma Delta Tau will come together to raise awareness for the prevention of suicide. As a sorority, we are dedicated to helping those affected by suicide and to help support the community of research and awareness of AFSP.

This foundation is near and dear to our hearts as we started the event to honor our friend Charles “Himmy” Himmelrich. Charles was a senior at the University of Miami who had a heart of gold and a contagious smile. The sisters of Sigma Delta Tau are coming together to raise awareness about suicide prevention and to honor the legacy Charles has left behind. AFSP creates a culture that’s smart about mental health by engaging in the following strategies: funding scientific research, educating the public about mental health and suicide prevention, advocating for public policies in mental health and suicide prevention, and supporting survivors of suicide loss and those affected by suicide. AFSP hosts a walk “Out of the Darkness” each year to support those who have lost a loved one and honor their memories.

Our goal this year is to raise $25,000 in order to support the research and funding for AFSP.

For statistics: Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the US. In 2024, approximately 55,000 people took their own lives due to suicide, and there were approximately 2,000,000 suicide attempts. 1 out of 6000 people attempt suicide, meaning there will be a handful of people in Boardman who try to take their own life.
