Home Elevator for the Smith Family
Independence firefighter Tyler Smith was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in October of 2022. After 6 months of regular treatments, he went into remission in May. Unfortunately that lasted only a few short months, as doctors found cancer cells before summer's end. He is currently undergoing aggressive treatment, including a recent stem cell transplant. The entire family is feeling the strain, as they are currently isolating to protect Tyler's immune system. His wife Kayla continues to work while also functioning as the primary caregiver for the entire family.
The Smith's oldest daughter Brookelyn was born with Congenital CMV. She is nonambulatory, nonverbal and has a number of other battles that come with her diagnosis. Brooke had a complex hip surgery last summer and is scheduled for a spinal fusion surgery this July. In fact, the Smiths had to delay the start of Tyler's second cancer treatments because his assistance was needed at home during Brooke's recovery.
Prior to Tyler's diagnosis, the Smiths made plans to install a home elevator to safely transport Brooke throughout their home. The space is built and ready, they literally just need the elevator. Tyler's treatments have left him unable to carry Brookelyn, leaving his wife to do it alone. While Tyler will get stronger each day, it will be many months before he's back to "normal".
With everything they've been through, the Smith family has not asked for help, and has stubbornly refused it when offered. They are kind, hardworking and selfless people who would help anyone in a time of need, but who do not want to be a burden to others.
Without them knowing, a group is trying to raise funds to purchase the elevator. (If they knew, they'd say no!) We were able to get a discount from the manufacturer and are working to secure the additional funds needed. A local charity, Answering The Call, has graciously stepped in to help make this happen by providing a conduit for donations and the ultimate purchase. All donations will be put into an earmarked fund and, once the necessary funds are there, Answering The Call will write a check to the elevator company.
Any funds raised above and beyond the $29,000 needed for the elevator will be donated by Answering The Call directly to the Smith Family for ongoing medical bills and expenses related to both Tyler's cancer and Brookelyn's CMV.
