As the old Mr. Rogers saying goes, I always look for the helpers. Professional firefighters are rightly celebrated members of our community. But they are not the only ones heroically working to save our homes and our lives.
There are nearly 1,000 incarcerated firefighters currently battling the LA fires. As part of a voluntary program, they earn between $5.80 to $10.24 per day, working in 24 hour shifts.
They deserve not only to be held up as heroes, but paid back for sacrificing their safety for ours. They may spend most of the year incarcerated, but when we need them, they show up for us, and they are no less members of our community than anyone who is free. What's more, supporting them now makes it more likely they integrate better when they are ultimately released.
Every dollar you donate here will go directly to The Anti-Recidivism Coalition's Firefighter Fund.
Your donations will fund
- Immediate needs: ‘thank you’ meals, hygiene supplies, clothing, and equipment for crew members on the ground battling the Palisades and Eaton fires
- Fire camp upgrades: TVs, microwaves, gym equipment, and more.
- Scholarship funds for individuals once they’re released: support for school supplies, housing, utilities, rent, as well as equipment for those entering professional firefighting careers.
For anyone interested in me: I am an actor and long-time LA resident, and several of my good friends have lost their home in the fires. I have followed the story of the incarcerated firefighters for years, and my hope is that through whatever notoriety i might have, I can bring attention (and funds) to their moving efforts.
