About JackAs many of you may already know, Jack Avakian, my beloved little brother, passed away on Monday, September 30th, after an accidental overdose. He was 22.
Jack was a special person -- a bright, talented, and athletic kid. His clever jokes never failed to make everyone laugh. He was a born leader - one time he stood on a table at a restaurant and got the entire restaurant to sing happy birthday to his friend. Jack loved watching horror movies & telling scary stories with me, listening to music & attending concerts with our mom, and hiking & camping with our dad. He was an amazing magician and loved performing his impressive magic tricks (he was particularly good with cards, and actually got a legitimate job offer from a club in Las Vegas when he was 16). He was an Eagle Scout and loved the outdoors. He was naturally athletic, and succeeded at literally every single sport he tried -- soccer, baseball, football, basketball, skiing, skateboarding, etc. He learned to play the guitar at a young age, and most recently was learning to play "Here Comes the Sun" by The Beatles.
Jack struggled with addiction and depression for years, which brought him unimaginable pain and suffering. Jack fought back as hard as he could, but ultimately his disease stole him from us far too soon. We are so heartbroken, but take comfort in knowing that he is no longer in pain. The opioid epidemic is very real, and as addiction and drug abuse disorders have increased, treatment has not.
Remembering Jack Avakian: Young Adult Scholarship Fund through the Ashley Treatment CenterIn lieu of flowers, we have chosen to raise money in Jack’s name for the Young Adult Scholarship Fund through the Ashley Treatment Center. This fund benefits emerging adults (ages 18 to 29) who are financially disadvantaged and unable to access rehabilitation and recovery services alone.
Jack always stood up for the underdog, and cared deeply about those who were disadvantaged and underprivileged. When he was able, he dedicated his time and effort into giving back. He truly wanted to help people.
We are so grateful for any donation and for helping us establish Jack's legacy. We love and miss him so much.

- Services will take place on Saturday, October 12th from 12PM to 1PM
