In May 2015, it was reported that the City of Augusta had plans to demolish old Synagogue building and the Court of the Ordinary building to expand the parking lot of the adjacent Municipal Building. The city owned both of them. The old court building was built in 1860 to be fireproof and to store all city records. The synagogue building was built in 1869 and is the oldest synagogue building still standing in the State of Georgia. Furthermore, it is in the top 10 of synagogue buildings still standing in the US. A large group of Augustans from both the Jewish and non-Jewish community, attended every City Council meeting until the city agreed not to demolish the buildings. The oldest standing synagogue in Georgia has been saved from the wrecking ball, however, the real work has just begun.
