Keep the Doors Open at Bay Street Players
It was recently announced that "Scrooge and Marley" will be executing a 200 year old land lien on our property which will put the theatre out of business. Clearly, this is a tongue in cheek look at reality as Ebenezer Scrooge is the protagonist/antagonist in our current production of "A Christmas Carol."
However, the reality of 2020 is certainly real and this historic theatre is on the verge of going dark. WE NEED OUR COMMUNITY'S HELP.
"For nearly 100 years, the State Theatre in Eustis has been a focal point of the arts in our City," says Becky Jaggers, President of Bay Street Players, "and for the last 45 years we have been THE community theatre in Eustis. From the days of Vaudeville to the modern 'Hamilton' era the State Theatre has been there for Lake County." As a community theatre, the State Theatre has given a home to thousands of local aspiring artists and those who just wanted an outlet for creativity over the years. "We are home to the longest continuously running Children's program in the state of FL," says Jim Quinlan, Vice President. "The theatre has given birth to generations of performers, some who are now professional actors."
The theatre has recently brought in Artistic Director Carlos-Fransisco Asse, an Emmy award winning set designer and director. "We want to put Lake County on the theatrical map," said Asse.
The global pandemic has seen many Central Florida performing arts venues close their doors. The State Theatre does not want to be the next. We have started this GoFundMe campaign to carry us through to "normal." These days season subscriptions are way down and ticket sales are slim to none despite the strictest of COVID precautions. We need new audiences to discover our theatre and the joys that we offer. A safe date night, a safe place for the kids to explore a new talent, or a safe evening for friends or the whole family to get out of the house. We are here.
Please, do not allow Ebenezer Scrooge to be the doornail in the theatre's coffin. Join us to truly save the State Theatre.
