The Bedford Humane Society is a 501c3 nonprofit organization founded in 1994 and dedicated to eliminating the overpopulation of cats and dogs in Bedford County, Virginia. Our programs include low cost spay/neuter, trap/neuter/release of feral cats, humane education and companion animal adoptions through our network of loving foster homes. We are funded entirely through donations by private citizens and grants from private foundations.

Bedford Humane Society has been improving the lives of cats, dogs and people for 30 years. The nonprofit was established in 1994 with dedicated volunteers insisting on changing the lives for cats, dogs and people. Over the next 30 years BHS ran as a foster only organization with no facility. In 2004, Vernon D. Lybolt passed away, willing BHS his estate which started the journey to build an adoption center. In 2009 with the funds, BHS purchased property at 829 Ole Turnpike Drive in the Town of Bedford, with future plans to build an adoption center in Bedford. Over the past few years, BHS has been working with Jones & Jones Architect, Coleman-Adams Construction, Hurt & Proffitt and Bedford Planning Commission to finalize the contracts and permits to break ground. With your donations this has become a reality and now we need your help for the final steps to build and open the adoption center. This adoption center will help the lost unwanted companion animals and assist the community with their many animal needs. Every dollar helps. Thank you for your support.

Hi everyone,

My name is Nikki, and I’m proud to be registering my Ferguson team, SIG R50, to participate in Project Holiday Joy 2025. This year, we’re raising funds for a cause very close to my heart: the Bedford Humane Society.

For several years, I’ve volunteered and fostered with this incredible organization. I’ve seen firsthand how tirelessly they work to support animals and families in our community—not just through compassion, but through essential, life-changing services. Bedford Humane Society is far more than a rescue group. They are a lifeline.

What Bedford Humane Society Does

Your donation will support programs that make a real, immediate difference, including:

Low-cost spay/neuter clinics that help reduce pet overpopulation and keep veterinary care accessible.

Free pet food assistance for families facing financial hardship, so pets can stay where they belong—at home with the people who love them.

Trap/Neuter/Release services that protect community cats and improve neighborhood conditions.

Emergency veterinary funding for families who otherwise would not be able to afford urgent care.

Pulling dogs from local shelters and placing them into loving foster homes, giving them a true chance at adoption and a brighter future.

Bedford Humane Society is entirely foster-based, which means every animal they save is cared for in a home. Their volunteers open their doors—and their hearts—so these animals can heal, decompress, and ultimately find their forever families.
