C-54 ”Spirit of Freedom” Road to Recovery
On April 13, 2020, a tornado tore through Lowcountry Regional Airport in Walterboro, SC destroying our flagship, Douglas C-54 "Spirit of Freedom". The "Spirit" is a flying, traveling museum dedicated to telling the story of the great Berlin Airlift of 1948-49, when Western powers stood up to the expansionist Soviet Union and supplied the blockaded city of Berlin, thereby saving 2.5 million Berliners from starvation, and ultimate Soviet occupation.
Despite the Covid-19 restrictions, we have managed to acquire a replacement C-54 to continue our important "Mission of History, Education, and Remembrance". In order to 'get back on the road', we will need financial support for costs associated with having the replacement C-54 painted, for interior improvements, insurance, for fuel and oil flying the replacement C-54 from Florida to South Carolina, then to the Crider Aircraft Paint shop in Mena, Arkansas, and return to New Jersey, as well as for all the travel expenses associated with this entire project. All of this totals nearly $125,000. A large amount considering the majority of the Foundation's income has been curtailed except for direct contributions.
