Bird Lab is raising money to help continue it's mission:

We create and implement bird-focused conservation practices through the integration of research, education, and community science that together create healthy ecosystems.

Research

We regularly conduct bird banding operations at three stations in the Pittsburgh region, each characterized by varying levels of urbanization and human impact. This unique approach sets our banding operations apart from others as we collect data to understand how migratory birds use local habitats. Our operations are highly mobile, allowing us to strategically deploy our research setup to capitalize on specific opportunities as they arise. Pictured below is a banded Ovenbird at Hays Woods. The bird is safely released after data collection.

Education

Birds sing. They are colorful, easy to see, and found everywhere. School groups that visit Bird Lab field sites get to see wild birds up-close. For students learning about birds within the classroom, stepping outside then becomes an immediate opportunity to put their knowledge into practice by identifying various bird species. Birds act as a gateway to facilitate a connection to the natural world, fostering interest in STEM/STEAM disciplines. Community Science

Bird Lab’s Community Scientists are dedicated volunteers who play a crucial role in our bird and habitat conservation endeavors. They actively participate in bird banding, contribute to data collection during site visits, and engage in various programs. Our commitment to involving the public in our work stems from the shared responsibility of preserving ecosystems, safeguarding our songbirds from extinction.
