Want to join me in making a difference? I'm raising money to buy books depicting change makers of African descent for children and schools in Ghana, Liberia, South Africa and the US, so that children can see themselves represented in books and any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.
Hello-
My name is Rosemond Sarpong Owens, I am a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice Practitioner in the Mid-Western United States.
I write and promote books about heroes and change makers of African descent so that young people can see themselves represented in books because I believe that our children cannot become what they cannot see. I am looking for funds to help me purchase books to give to young people In the United States and in Africa. I have completed identical fundraisers over the years to ship containers of books to Ghana to donate to schools, libraries, orphanages, families beyond thanks to the generosity of people like you.
To counter racist socialization and racial bias, experts recommend that children see themselves be represented in books as early and as often as possible. Children’s books are one of the most effective and practical tools for making that happen. Children's books highlighting trail blazers, heroes and changemakers of African descent seek to empower children and the youth to see what is possible. Children not only need to know that trailblazers exist, they also need to know that they can look like them and become like them. This is why it’s important for kids to read about people like them who probably struggled in life like them and yet, still persisted. That way when they are confronted with a stereotype or discrimination or feel that they cannot amount to anything, they have a foundation of accurate information from which to draw.
Together we can create communities where diversity is celebrated, equity is achieved, and inclusion is the norm.
