Help save one of India’s oldest tribes and combat global warming while doing so!
Khasi Mythology:
According to myth, the Khasi had originally distributed their tribes into 16 heavenly families. However, seven out of these 16 families were stuck on earth while the other 9 are stuck in heaven. According to the myth, a heavenly ladder enabled people to go freely and frequently to heaven whenever they pleased until one day they were tricked into cutting a divine tree. A grave error which prevented them access to the heavens forever. This myth is often seen as a metaphor of how nature and trees, in particular, are the manifestation of the divine on Earth and destroying nature and trees means severing our ties with the divine and spirit world.

For decades the Khasi have been left without government support. Struggling to access basic needs including infrastructure, technology, and education, the Khasi people started tearing down their sacred trees to make ends meet. Arriving in Northeast India 57,000 year ago, the Khasi are considered one of the oldest tribes in India. The non-profit organization Carbon Offsets to Alleviate Poverty (COTAP) empowers the Khasi tribe to save their rainforest and receive funds needed to sustain their economy and livelihood. COTAP’s carbon offsetting program will allow the Khasi tribe to plant trees and get paid for it! This is a win-win because this project will not only help sustain Khasi’s livelihood, but the funds will be used to provide electricity so kids can study at night.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Although a complex concept to tackle in a single GoFundMe page, Carbon offsetting gives individuals and corporations a chance to neutralize their carbon footprint by planting trees. Success looks like planting enough trees to suck up the same (if not more) carbon from the environment as you/the company emitted through things like air travel, industrial manufacturing, and other carbon emitting activity.
We’ve set out to raise a dollar amount representative of the amount needed for solar electrification in a large portion of the Khasi region. By raising $10,000, we will provide 200 families with the solar lighting they need for their children to study at night, we’ll provide a safer environment, and reduce the need for kerosene and other fossil fuels for lighting. Instead of cutting down trees to use as firewood to cook, families will be provided propane cooktops to offset their dependence on firewood.

Due to widespread poverty and lack of government support, if the Khasi don’t help each other, then they are lost. So I implore my fellow Pakistanis, Indians, and others with Khasi lineage to help.
