Help Nyamboyo Teens Build a Library
Nyamboyo Technical School (NTS) is a vocational school in Nyamboyo Village, Kenya. Our mission is to lift teens in rural Kenya from extreme poverty, transforming them into successful, economically independent professionals. In a community of 58,000 residents where over 65% live below the international poverty level, our students face economic barriers to survival that can end their education after primary school.
NTS breaks this poverty cycle, providing young people with technical skills leading directly to employment. Students study one of four trades chosen because they are growing economic sectors in our region: Electrical wiring, hairdressing, masonry/carpentry, and tailoring. School also includes essential academics, employment skills, physical & mental health programs, and 3 daily meals. For many of our students, this is the first time they have eaten 3 times daily.
Our goal is to raise $2,000 to create a school library, buying books, newspapers, and magazines. Books will be in both English and Swahili. For many of our students, this will be the first time they have access to reading material other than a textbook. (And keep in mind that in Kenya’s underfunded public schools, 10 students often share 1 book in class!)
Our students are desperate to read and learn about the world. The books will be novels, histories, technical books, and graphic novels. We will subscribe to the two top Kenyan English-language newspapers. We will also subscribe to one trade magazine in each trade.
