Dear Charlotte Rugby Family,

The Charlotte Rugby Club is in need of your help.

As the only rugby club in the southeast with a full field and clubhouse, we have a greater responsibility on the shoulders of our members than our peers. We’re fortunate to have such a responsibility – we love having a place we call home. Reaching nearly 30 years in age, that home needs many repairs and improvements.

On Friday April 23 we discovered a massive leak in the main water line to the clubhouse. This leak had gone undetected over a long period of time. As soon as the issue was discovered, we shut the water off to the clubhouse to prevent any further damage. As such, we have not been able to utilize the facility to its fullest extent, even with most COVID restrictions lifted. We have since asked 4 different plumbing companies to investigate and propose a solution along with a quote. Our Board of Directors and facility chairs have selected Wyatt Works Plumbing and are in the process of scheduling the repair. This repair will cost approximately $3,000.

We have since discovered that this leak was the main source, not rain water or septic issues, of the flooding in our equipment room via 2 sources. The first source was through the conduit to our panel. The plumbers we spoke with informed us that there was most likely a crack in the conduit that runs alongside the line from the well. The other source was the leak itself flooding part of our crawl space, running out of the building along a cut out for plumbing and being carried by the channel under that piping along the clubhouse itself. Thankfully, cutting off the water has allowed the equipment room to dry. We now have extensive mold and pest remediation to do. While this has not been quoted yet, we have had a city inspector walk through this space and have scheduled a mold remediation specialist to quote this process. While we believe this might be something we can tackle within the club, the supplies to do so safely are still costly.

Based on the information from the Inspection as well as walk throughs from our Facilities Chairs (one of which is a Civil Engineer), we have begun to develop a prioritized list of projects. These include but aren’t limited to replacing windows, replacing damaged fascia and soffits along the roof, and connecting to city water. We expect those 3 projects alone to cost approximately $55,000 based on initial quotes received. Once we have a finalized list, we will begin the process of quoting out the major projects and determining which can be done internally.

We are beginning this facilities improvement fundraiser today to fix our immediate and midterm needs. Any monies raised in excess of these initial projects will be used to establish a clubhouse maintenance fund.
