Children's Alopecia Project

My Name is Steven Carroll, and I have been battling an autoimmune condition called "Alopecia" since 2017.

This devastating autoimmune condition directly attacks hair follicles leaving either only patches of hair or (in my case) not a single hair left on your body. There are 7.8 Million of us in the US and 137 Million worldwide. 

My Story:

Imagine being a single 31 years old, trying to date, figure out your career as well as the rest of your life. Then imagine that you start to notice your hair falling out by the handful...EVERYWHERE. Not just your scalp, but eyebrows, arm hair.. every part of you until there is nothing left. It changed my entire self image, leaving me embarrassed to go out in public. Forget dating, I could barely recognize my own face. It was devastating to my self esteem, self confidence and my overall emotional well being. 

That is exactly what happened to me 3 years ago.  After much research, I was officially diagnosed with Alopecia, and learned that although aside from the hair-loss I was healthy. The problem is that the condition left much more damage in its wake. 

Over time I learned how to love my new self image all over again and find the confidence to go out in public, date and even go on interviews. I had to face the awkward stares, the unsuccessful dates and sympathetic looks from people who assume that I have cancer (which I do not). 

During this tough time, I found an incredible community of people who suffer from the same condition. I was able to connect with people in different countries. I found that there were not only adults, but children who suffer from Alopecia as well. I have learned strength and self-confidence by kids less than half my age. 

On Saturday October 31st I am running the NYC Marathon  to raise funds for children fighting this devastating condition. Every dollar I raise is going to the Children's Alopecia Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to localized support, events, and resources to help connect those battling this condition find connection, community, confidence and healing until we find a cure.  

Despite the millions that this condition affects, there is very little awareness about Alopecia, so I am doing my part to raise awareness.  Please help me raise awareness and funds for this life changing organization! Every dollar Counts.

As many of you know my son Jake suffers from Alopecia. He has been losing his hair since he was four years old.  As of yet so few gains have been made in a cure for this disease. This disease has a huge emotional strain on the child and the family. Being different isn't fun.  So after a bad day for him and feeling helpless,  I decided to use the North East 24 hour challenge off road dirt bike race as a fund raiser.  You may wish to donate a flat dollar amount or a dollar amount per lap we complete. My good friend and teammate Rob Brown are shooting for 30 laps in the 24 hour period!

The race is July 20 & 21. After the race we will post our lap count or you can check The Arcadia Barkbuster website to track us for your self.
