Help Us Restore Denver Chinatown’s History!
Colorado Asian Pacific United (CAPU) is asking for your help to restore our historical marker! You might recognize us from our efforts to re-envision Denver's historic Chinatown, mainly through events, murals, and historical markers that tell the tale of the once-thriving Chinatown destroyed by racial violence in the 19th century.
After much work, we installed three historical markers and a mural to honor Denver’s Chinatown. This was a milestone in our community, as there is little to no evidence that Chinatown ever existed. One of our markers stood next to an alleyway near Wazee and 16th, the heart of Chinatown in the late 1800s. This marker was a window into the area’s history and origins.
Regrettably, in early December 2023, we discovered that the marker was missing and torn from its base. While the circumstances surrounding the marker’s disappearance remain unclear, we are committed to reinstalling it and preserving the legacy it represents. We will not allow Denver’s historic Chinatown to be erased again.
This is where we need your help. We are reaching out to our community to help us raise $12,000 in our GoFundMe campaign for fabrication and reinstallation of the historical marker. Your support, whether contributing financially and/or sharing this post is deeply appreciated.
If you also happen to have any helpful information about the whereabouts of the missing marker, please reach out. All information will be treated with the highest confidentiality. Let's come together to ensure that the story of Chinatown in Denver continues to be told for generations to come.
Thank you for being part of our journey to preserve and celebrate Denver's rich AAPI cultural heritage.
With gratitude,
The Team at CAPU
