About Communication First

CommunicationFIRST is the only US disability-led nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to defending, protecting, and advancing the civil rights of the more than 5 million children and adults in the United States who due to disability or other condition, are unable to speak or have difficulty being understood when speaking. We believe that having access to the tools and supports necessary to effectively express one’s thoughts, needs, and desires is a fundamental human right and that communication is essential to autonomy, self-determination, and well-being. Our mission is to engage the public, advocate for policy change, and use litigation to protect and advance the human and civil rights of this historically marginalized population.
