50 Years of Leadership & Support
Burnett Miller was a founding member of the Community of Writers at Squaw Valley, now nearing the 50th year since it’s founding. In addition to his stalwart leadership of this non-profit, he and his wife Mimi visited the workshops in poetry, prose, and screenwriting every summer. Many preeminent writers and poets benefitted from a week on the mountain early in their writing lives, including Kazim Ali, Michael Chabon, Janet Fitch, Glen David Gold, Richard Ford, Jennifer Egan, Claudia Rankine, Anne Rice, Evie Shockley, Alice Sebold, Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney, Amy Tan, and many others. Authors who came as participants often return later to teach, continuing a 50-year cycle of learning and giving back, nurturing new talent and contributing to literary history. Burnett loved this bohemian family, the oldest writing workshop in the west, first conceived in 1969 by novelists Oakley Hall and Blair Fuller. Please join us in honoring Burnett’s memory by donating to this community he loved, and one where he is beloved and will be missed. Your gift will help the Community of Writers as we look forward to our next 50 years.
