Recovery for Congregation Albert
Justice, justice we pursued!! What comes next?
Congregation Albert of Albuquerque, New Mexico is thriving spiritually; we are coming together with renewed ruach (spirit), and excitement. As the oldest continually operational Jewish organization in New Mexico, our commitment to our shared journey in our high desert home remains as strong as it was when we were founded in 1897.
Our early childhood center is ranked among the best in the state and is continuing to thrive and grow; our religious school is burgeoning and bursting at the seams with record numbers of students and a vibrant atmosphere. Rabbi Celia Surget, who became our rabbi in 2021, has been a spiritual lightning bolt to our community, directing and energizing our community in exciting new ways. Cantor Barbara Finn has been our cantor for 20 years, elevating our religious services with song. We are truly blessed with a vibrant, engaged, excited community.
So if we're doing so well, why do we have a GoFundMe? Great question.
In 2019, we discovered that the administrator at the time had embezzled a very large amount of money from us. So large, in fact, that when she finally was held criminally responsible for the embezzlement, she was sentenced to two decades in prison for her crime against our Congregation Albert.
Despite achieving justice for her criminal actions, we will not be reimbursed for our losses, which have left a considerable scar on our ledgers. This has impacted our programs aimed at benefiting the broader community, as well as our ability to perform repairs to the building that houses us.
This GoFundMe is part of a larger strategy to overcome the financial loss that we are overcoming. Would you consider donating today to help support Congregation Albert?
