Conscious Kid

This year for Harry’s 39th birthday, we are reaching out and asking for donations to help support a charity close to his heart, The Conscious Kid. 

The Conscious Kid is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to equity and promoting healthy racial identity development in youth. They donate books that foster anti-racist conversation and action to thousands of elementary schools in all 50 states. The Conscious Kid has also raised and provided over $1 million in rent relief to families that are struggling financially due to the impact of Covid-19.

Harry has always kept The Conscious Kid in mind when donating part of his proceeds from conventions (https://youtu.be/EdqmT41dqZM), or giving a shoutout to them during Giving Tuesday (https://www.instagram.com/tv/CIRdTH1AUEb/?igshid=1wtsyjedrd327) and we feel there’s no better way to celebrate him than by following his example and donate to this organization in his name. 

Let’s honor Harry for his birthday in one of the best possible ways by giving to this charity and show what a positive impact he has on all of us! And remember: a small amount goes a long way!

As a team, Smith Lacrosse wanted to do our part to help raise awareness for the Black Lives Matter movement and the police brutality occurring all over the country. The reason we chose to donate to the Conscious Kid is because we believe that education is a strong tool in dismantling systemic racism and injustices at a young age, exposing the symptoms and racist beliefs and better preparing youth and others to take action and create positive change.

In recent weeks, we have been wanting to help during the Black Lives Matter movement. With young children at home, we are participating in peaceful demonstrations and talking about race and injustices. But we wanted to do more.

This thought led us to an idea in which children could help the cause.

Our kids love to bike! We think others may want to join us (in person and virtually) as we bike for 8.46 miles in remembrance of George Floyd, and so many others who have died tragically at the hands of police officers. The bike ride will take place in our small town in Vermont on Sunday, June 28, 2020.

We are asking for donations in the amount equal to the mileage that we bike: $8.46

We believe that by doing something positive and active with children, we can continue the anti-racism conversation and help to bring about change.

All funds raised will be donated to The Conscious Kid, a 501(c)3 non-profit. The Conscious Kid is an education, research and policy organization dedicated to reducing bias and promoting positive identity development in youth. They partner with organizations, children’s museums, schools, and families across the country to promote access to children’s books centering underrepresented and oppressed groups.

All donations made here go to a dedicated fund for us to get children’s books from our list of “41 Children’s Books to Support Conversations on Race, Racism, and Resistance” into classrooms across the country.

Beyond addressing issues of race and racism, these children’s books focus on taking action. They highlight resistance, resilience, and activism, and seek to empower youth to participate in the ongoing movement for racial justice. Children not only need to know what individual, systemic, and internalized racism looks like, they need to know what they can do about it."
