Cookie Needs Surgery!
Cookie has been with us since January patiently waiting for his forever home, while growing up in foster care. At just nine months old Cookie has found himself in need of surgery. Last month he came up lame and after two consults it was determined he has medial patellar luxations on both sides. Basically his knee caps don't stay in place and slide out causing him pain and lameness. The doctor determined he is a good candidate for single-staged bilateral surgeries, getting both repaired at the same time. We will be scheduling Cookie's sugery with SAGE and hoping to offset some of those costs. We don't know the extent of repairs needed until fully in there and of course complications from surgery can arise so hoping our community of supporters can help Copper's Dream replenish our medical fund from the big hit it will take.
Details on the surgery from the doctor:
Repairing a patellar luxation includes combination of deepening the groove, moving the tendon attachment and tightening the joint capsule as needed based on findings. Discussed that patients with MPL can also concurrently tear their cranial cruciate ligament (CCL), which may require two types of surgical repair. Oftentimes, we diagnose the CCL tear on physical exam under anesthesia or upon entry to the joint in surgery, as it can be somewhat difficult to assess when awake often due to small partial tears, enough to make Cookie sore and lame, in addition to the MPL. It is important to watch for any acute worsening and we may find that once we're looking into the joint, we may identify a CCL tear.
While this can be a common condition with little dogs and many do not require surgery we have taken into consideration Cookie's young age and current amount of pain and find it's only fair for the little guy to get the best chance at a happy pain free life.
