Cycling For Cristo Rey Atlanta
3872 MILES in 52 Days!!!!
As a "once in a lifetime" personal goal, I have committed to ride across our beautiful USA in 2015. My cycling adventure begins May 31st in San Francisco and ends July 21st in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. I will be personally funding all expenses associated with the trip with all monies raised benefiting Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit High School.
As a young teenager growing up on a Midwestern dairy farm, I would have never imagined cycling across the USA. I was blessed to have loving parents who led by example and taught me the values of hard work and helping neighbors in need. Coming from this modest family upbringing, I funded all of my undergraduate college and graduate school education in the engineering and science fields. I am looking forward to committing my cross-country cycling challenge (3872 miles in 52 days) to Cristo Rey Atlanta with its academic and work study model mirroring real life experience and my own personal values.
Cristo Rey Atlanta is a Catholic learning community that educates young people of limited economic means to become men and women of faith, purpose, and service. Cristo Rey Atlanta is a member of a network of 28 Cristo Rey schools around the country that empower young students to achieve their full potential. The school opened in Midtown Atlanta in July 2014 to 154 freshman and is providing a college preparatory education for some of the city’s and metropolitan Atlanta region's most underserved students. Unique to Cristo Rey schools is that all students work five full days a month in a corporate job through their innovative Corporate Work Study Program. Monies earned help fund 60% of their education. The Cristo Rey model is unquestionably successful, where 100% of their graduates are accepted into college. The graduation rate for this demographic is 10%.
This is a special opportunity for me to “give back” and it is my privilege to ride in honor of these remarkable young people. I hope you will join me in my effort to support their academic journey, as I embark on mine. My goal is to raise $30,000, the equivalent to six annual student scholarships, to be awarded to students who have indicated a desire to study and pursue career paths in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
I invite you to help me at whatever level you can and please know every donation is greatly appreciated by these worthy students and me!
