Growing Families Through Education
East Wayne Street Center was established in 1965 by Ian Rolland and the Crescent Avenue Methodist Church. The Center provides adult basic education classes for students attempting to pass the High School Equivalency Exam or HSE (formerly known as GED). The Center provides free transportation and childcare, two of the traditional barriers for returning students. The Center also pays for the cost of the HSE ($90) and provides a cap and gown ceremony for all graduates. All funds are used for educational materials, teacher salaries, transportation, and childcare. For every person that drops out of high school, it costs our community an average of $260,000 over their lifetime in unpaid income taxes, social services, and incarceration fees. We've had 16 graduates in the last 12 months. Our programs also provide access to vocational training, apprenticeships, parenting classes and college scholarships.
Our mission is to empower families and individuals through education. Our programs serve low-income individuals striving for self-sufficiency. Our goal is to simply give those who want a better life, the chance to achieve that goal. If they have the desire and put forth the effort, we are there to help remove the barriers to success. We hope you can appreciate the vital nature of our mission. For more information please visit our website: ewscenter.org
